Tuesday the 5th July, Brilliant summer day

A friend of my childhood and today a church organinst, Mrs.K came to pick us up by car at 8:45. We left for the Nishi Tokyo church for a day of organ lessons. So comfortable to just sit in an air conditioned car, chat pleasantly, and find myself in front of the church on time!

Once arrived safely, Mrs.K sat in the calm church and started prepare her concentration.
I was warming up on the organ as my body was still used to the particular organ, that I practised yesterday. To get used to the organ, it is like a "rehabilitation" each time. I felt the "screws" in each part of my joints move and turn.

Today I was going to give private lesson of one hour to four students.
And they could stay and listen the others' lessons.
And all of them stayed the whole session from 10:00 to 4:00. Impressive!

Program was all Bach;

Am Wasserflüssen Babylon
Toccata in F-Dur
Toccata, Adagio und Fuga in C-Dur
Toccata und Fuge in d-moll

…and all big works!

They were "serious" organists trying to play serious organ works : it meant that I got really serious too. In the second photo, I look as if I am in a car driving. A teacher might be driving the "music" together with the student, who is sitting on the driving seat.

We worked mainly on the "construction" of its interpretation.

There is the way to play "regularly", where the notes to be played are expected to fall where it should be, in the image of the sawing machine. If there is a "taking of time", meaning delaying the fall of a note, it shows an intention of something, a meaning.

So we should not take time meanlessly.
A performance (or interpretaion) "irregular" without meaning, is similar to a house with a wound pole or window which is not straight : the structure is not clear. The audience will not understand what is happening if such irregularity occurs without reason. Then they can't follow the "speech", or the "drive".

The first step of a good performance is, to let the audience come with it, to be "followable".
In my opinion, anyway.

As we were serious, in another word "professional" in our attitude, there were conflicts.
Quite sure enough, to perform a big work, we make some "inconvinient" parts negociated in our ways. There were things which had been "sorted out" in their ways, but not in the best ways. I wished, even if I had only one hour with each of them, to get those problems sorted.

Or to let them realise - or, let them accept that it was not ideal.

So I had to break some of what they do and rework the part in a new way.
It's a kind of "restauration".

Of course, I would not have time to change their entire technique.
But if I could let them feel something of a tilt, I believe the grip to have touched what really works is going to help them go further.

Each of them also "confessed" their difficulties to reach the end or worris about particular bars preventing them to keep the concentration. We tried to "reserve" our energy for the moments which really need the big concentration, rather than spending too much energy in the place where it does not require. That is something we have to do each time we play! Renewing each time the habit. But it can be said that it is the same thing in the daily life. We must dure till the end of the day, that is, for every day and for whole year!

But even for my students in Belgium, whom I see every week, the progress on this subject is always gradual.
Never possible to change that attitude in short time.
So I wished them good patience, and told them to aime the change in long term.

The four photos in the middle are the snaps of the environment of the church.
Our journalist - photographer took a little walk during the lesson as I would not have time to go with her. The blok wall with pin shapes, for examle, is so Japanese. A pure beauty! And my daughter, who is the journalist of course, loved the shape of the post box.

I found the day "dream-like" as I could only concentrate to the music and nothing else.
They were very good at organisation, including the lunch time. My day is normally much more labour-like, starting the day by trying to arrive in the church by trains or bus or whatever, carrying heavy musics, etc. Today I was brought there and drove home, with no effort!

After supper, we tried to bake some speculoos.
As there is no same dark sugar here as in Belgium, I just had to know what it gives with the lighter coloured one.

Using Okinawa sugar and the Belgian spices that I brought, we bakes the first lot, with acceptable result. I found them tasty. But the temperature was going to be the unkown element : the doght stuck too easily to the wooden form! I had never that problem in Belgium. If it is now about 18 degrees in Brussels, here in Tokyo records up to 38 degrees … 10 to 20 degrees of differences, can give all the difference in the biscuits' future beauty!

I had no problem of sleepiness.
A week since I am here, and I am tokiote finally.
