(They are the photos of the entrance hall to the Tokyo Matsumoto Memorial Hall for the Music Lovers, the Shumacher organ, and the Adachi Harpsichord. The the program note follows...)

The organ of the Matsumoto Memorial Guest House for Music lovers, is built by the German speaking Belgian organ builder, Shumacher, in the German Baroque style. The builder's principal master work is the restauration of the 16th century organ with its beautifully restaured organ case, in the Church of St Jacques in Liège, Belgium.

The harpsichord used today for the "French Overture" is in French style with two keyboards, built by the Japanese builder, the Adachi Atelier of Clavecin.

I must explain why I have chosen to use the harpsichord during this organ recital. When I had the chance to play the French Overture in the original key of c-minor, I prefered it to the generally played second version in b-minor. It made more sense.
As I was straggling to get the character of the second trio sonate in the same key later on, it came to my mind the c-minor version of the French Overture, and the comparison helped me.

That was why I took the extracts of the French Overture to be included in my CD with the second trio sonate of Bach. First I thought of bringing a harpsichord into the church, but the church where I recorded the CD permited a very good acoustic for the details played on the organ, so I kept the whole CD to the organ. But I am happy to be able to use the harrpsichord today, as the Overture is written for it.

Now, what about the c-minor?
What is the character of this tonality?

As I have cited in the program note of the newly released CD sold after the concert today, it was Johann Mattheson, the music theorist of the time of Bach, who wrote about the key : Sweet and charming, but it can overwork to sleepiness. But if it is the intention, let it be so, naturally.

The word "sleep" eventually meant the "eternal rest", to avoid the word "death". The Passion according to St Matthieu of Bach starts in the key of e-minor and travels into all sort of keys before ending massively in c-minor symphonia. We often play pieces in c-minor durng the offices of funeral and the Passion tide.

I have made my own version of explanation why the c-minor became the key of the "sleep".

They had been using the Dorien mode since the sixth century as "easy to sing" key. the Dorien mode consists of the following notes : d,e,f,g,a,b, and c, without the b flat.

If that was the natural and confortable key, the whole one note deeper key of c-minor with two flats minimum could be rather too low and complicated for the voice. The c-minor consists of the following notes : c,d,e(flat),f,g,a(flat), and b.
Historically, this key with three flats has been rather rare, as far from the easy keys like C-major, G-major or F-major, until the modern piano got developped, with the equal temperament.

The Baroque temperament meant that G sharp was far more important than the A flat, as the G sharp is the leading note for the a-minor, which is near from the C-major or other frequently used tonalities. The problem is, the A flat and the G sharp are the same note. It was obligatory to choose between tuning the note higher or lower to get either A flat or G sharp.

Beside the fact that it suggests "low and deep = sleepy", the c-minor also has the air of "troublesomeness". The c-minor melody line and the harmony with three flats can be telling us "You would not be able to go to sleep so easily". I wish you a pleasent listening till the last "Fantaisie in c-moll" possibly inviting us to the way leading to the "Eternal Paradise". (Momoyo Kokubu)
